Supporting Our Public Schools
Every child deserves an opportunity to succeed. Our Newton school system currently ranks among the best in the state and provides graduates with many opportunities.
My wife and I both attended and graduated from the Newton School system. I have also had the unique privilege of putting my own three children through Newton public schools.
To this day, I remain deeply connected to, and concerned about, the future or our schools. I will continue to fight to make sure our schools remain one of the city’s top priorities.
I have always, and will continue, to prioritize appropriately funding the school system.
I strongly believe we must provide our Superintendent with the budget she needs to keep our schools on the right path moving forward.
Infrastructure
The strength of Newton’s infrastructure is critical if we are to remain one of the most desirable cities in which to live.
We have updated some of our schools and roads. However, many more roads are in dire need of attention.
In addition, several of our schools and other municipal buildings are in desperate need of rehabilitation or reconstruction.
We must make significant, appropriate investments in our collective assets in order to maintain a 21st century city.
Investing in our infrastructure now makes our city better, and keeps us from having to pay even higher costs from deferred maintenance at a later date.
Parking Policy
Citywide parking policy is extremely complicated and impacts traffic as well.
I remain highly interested in reducing reliance on the automobile for future residents, while continuing to allow those of us with cars to navigate the city effectively.
I think it is unwise policy for our zoning ordinances to require developers to construct parking spaces. The more parking we require developers to build, the more we continue to promote a reliance on automobiles.
Traffic is a major issue throughout the city and I am always looking for ways to alleviate residents of this burden.
Responsible Growth
Reasonable and appropriate development is essential for building a fiscally sustainable future, as a diverse, inclusive and accessible community.
I know that our economic growth must align with long-term financial stability and environmental stewardship.
I will promote smart planning, wise investments in a resilient infrastructure and responsible development so that we can balance immediate needs with future obligations and avoid the costly consequences of shortsighted policies.
I strongly believe that this is the path to economic resilience.
Something Else That Concerns You?
I know there are many other issues facing our city that are important to you. I look forward to discussing any and all of your concerns as I see you around Newton.
